Abbey Lea Care Home

Built in the early-mid 19th century, Abbey Lea benefits from charming Georgian architecture alongside modern-day facilities, giving it an intimate, homely feel with the reassurance of a fully-equipped care home. Our secure garden offers a tranquil space full of mature trees and shrubs, with many colourful plants and flowers growing all year round.

With twenty-one bedrooms, we are proud to offer a small-home experience which creates a real sense of community between our residents, their families and friends, and our attentive staff team. Residents are welcome to join in group activities in the living room, enjoy meals with friends in the dining room, or savour some quiet time in the sunroom with views of the garden.

Friends, family, and community are a big part of life here at Abbey Lea. Our door is always open to visitors, and we regularly reach out to the community with a lively programme of events – everything from Christmas Fairs to summer garden parties.

Our Rooms

residential care in Selby

Our bedrooms are thoughtfully decorated to provide residents with a tranquil, private space of their own, with most rooms overlooking the garden and grounds.

Several of our bedrooms have a private en-suite WC and we have two companion rooms for residents wishing to share with a friend or loved one.

All of our rooms have comfortable beds, armchairs, and plenty of space to store clothes and other personal belongings. We encourage residents to make their room their own, displaying pictures, ornaments, and other treasured items.

Shared spaces

Our grade II listed building means our shared spaces enjoy high ceilings and period features, creating a sense of space and light in a homely environment. Our ‘Memory Lane’ corridor is a wonderful way to spark conversation of times gone by with residents as they travel to and from the sunroom in the extended section of Abbey Lea, which was added to the main part of the home in the early 2000s. The sunroom also leads directly out into the garden, which is enjoyed regularly in spring and summer months.

Weekly movement sessions are held in the living room and craft activities are enjoyed in the small dining room while listening to music. We seek regular input from residents about which events or special days they would like to mark, and we display their creative work around the home whenever possible.

Our residents are encouraged and supported to make use of all our spaces and our support staff are always on hand to offer help and a kind word.

Wellness and Activities… Happy and active living

We recognise the incredibly positive effects that being active and stimulated places on a person’s wellbeing, and this is of even greater importance as we get older. We build our programme of events together with our residents, ensuring that we have something interesting taking place every day of the year. These can include national holidays, gentle weekly fitness sessions, craft workshops and much more.

We love to make connections with local businesses and services, and in recent months have welcomed ponies, reptiles, puppies, pop-up pantomimes and local music bands into our home!

We love to share our residents’ experiences on our Facebook page, so please do visit and like our page to receive regular updates on life here at Abbey Lea Care Home.
